MDW Cares is proud to announce the upcoming launch of The Wildflower Project, a year-round community program designed to help teenage girls cultivate confidence, meaningful relationships, and a stronger sense of belonging through gardening, mentorship, and hands-on learning experiences.
Set to launch in October 2026, The Wildflower Project was created in response to increasing concerns about social isolation, anxiety, and disconnection among teens. The program offers an alternative approach to traditional extracurricular activities, creating space for girls who are looking for a different way to learn, connect, and grow.
"We know not every young person finds their place through sports, clubs, or traditional social settings," said Elizabeth Rago, Founder of MDW Cares. "The Wildflower Project is designed to provide another pathway to connection. One that is slower, more intentional, and rooted in relationships, nature, and community."
The program uses gardening as a foundation for personal growth and community building. Beginning with a winter planning phase and continuing through planting, tending, harvesting, and reflection, participants will engage in seasonal activities that mirror natural cycles of growth and change. Along the way, they will learn practical gardening skills, develop confidence, build friendships, and connect with trusted adult mentors.
A unique aspect of The Wildflower Project is its emphasis on intergenerational connection. Through MDW Cares' established network of women, participants will have opportunities to learn alongside mentors who can share knowledge, encouragement, and life experiences in a supportive environment.
The program will also partner with local businesses and agricultural leaders to provide experiential learning opportunities. Planned experiences include visits with organizations, working farms, and feature speakers in agriculture and food production.
Beyond gardening, The Wildflower Project aims to help participants develop resilience, communication skills, self-confidence, and a deeper connection to both their community and the natural world.
MDW Cares is currently building partnerships with schools, businesses, volunteers, community organizations, and potential participants in preparation for the program's official launch. Community members interested in learning more, volunteering, partnering with the program, or receiving launch updates are encouraged to join the Wildflower Project interest list.
