Word of the Week: Susurrus

ree

Definition: A soft whispering or rustling sound, like the quiet murmur of leaves before they let go, or the faintest sigh of wind moving through tall grass.

There’s a special kind of magic in the almosts. The moments before everything changes. Susurrus captures that quiet hum that happens right before a shift, when nature seems to inhale and hold for a second, waiting to exhale into something new.

It’s the low, warm buzz of late summer cicadas. The rustle of hydrangeas hanging on to their blooms just a little longer. The whisper that says, “It’s not time yet, but soon.”

And isn’t that where so many of us find ourselves? In the in-between - waiting for clarity, momentum, or even just a sign that what we’ve been working toward is finally about to bloom.

Practicing Patience in the Pause

Take a few moments this week to reflect on what your own “susurrus season” might be whispering to you.

  1. What am I impatient for right now?

  2. What small signs of change are already rustling beneath the surface?

  3. How can I soften into waiting instead of fighting it?

  4. What might this pause be preparing me for?

You don’t have to bloom every day. Sometimes your only job is to listen for the whisper that says: not yet, but soon.

Self-Talk for the Waiting Season

When you catch yourself getting restless, try repeating one of these gentle reminders:

  • “I can trust the timing of my own becoming.”

  • “Stillness is not stagnation.”

  • “I am allowed to rest before the next season of growth.”

  • “Change is already in motion, even if I can’t see it yet.”

The Beauty of What’s Coming

Fall always takes its time. And when it arrives, it transforms everything. The air sharpens, the light softens, and even the most ordinary paths become golden. The waiting might feel endless right now, but like the susurrus of wind in the trees, change always begins quietly.

Be patient with the pause. Listen closely. Something beautiful is already on its way.
